The house was built originally in 1857 by one of the 6,000 settlers that ventured from the Gulf Coast via the Atlantic Ocean with the assistance of the Verein Society under the guidance of John Meusebach after Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels went back home to Germany. After declaring New Braunfels as their new home, they married, raised children and thrived as laborers in the craft of metal-spinning until the Secession of Texas, when many immigrants served under the Texas State Troops and Texas Cavalryof the Confederacy fighting for their land, family, neighbors, philosophy and beliefs. The family continued to be an integral part of the community by owning various mercantile shops while embracing their heritage and culture. The cottage design is known as German Fachwerk, a half-timbered house created by utilizing heavy native cedar joints via pegged mortise and tenon joints chocked in with cut adobe brick. The cottage gives you a glimpse of local Texas history as you pass through its doors and admire the decorated rooms filled with original primitive antique furniture and metalwork passed down by generations of family. The house offers a kitchen, living room, dining room, master bedroom, guest loft and a shared bathroom with a later period claw-footed tub and cabinetry originally used by Ferdinand Lindheimer, the Father of Texas Botany while printing the New Braunfels Herald Zeitung, the local paper still in syndication today. The front porch swing will provide a picturesque view of scenic hayfields, grazing cattle and Rosalea's love of gardening with a variety of annuals, perennials and Texas native plants in bloom.
