The North Shore of Kauai, Hawaii Our Hanalei, Kauai, Hawaii home, is located about 100 yards from an almost deserted golden, sandy beach, with good snorkeling. A little farther down the road is a large horseshoe reef providing skin diving, scuba diving and swimming in Hawaii. "Tunnels", of surfer's paradise fame, is some of the best, located here. At the foot of Bali Hai is a beach that provides fine swimming and snorkeling.
The Kauai, Hawaii, home itself is secluded and set well back from the road. Coconut, papaya and many varieties of bananas landscape the property. While it is not directly on the ocean, the view of the Kauai's Na Pali Mountains is spectacular and can be endlessly viewed from our private back deck. This section of Kauai, Hawaii, has been used for filming hundreds of South Seas motion pictures and TV series. The area is one of the most photographed in the world, appearing in many travel posters and travel articles on Hawaii. Lumuhai Beach, located less than a mile from our home, is featured in "Conde Nast Traveler" magazine in its choice of Kauai, Hawaii as one of the top ten islands in the world.
The location and the home are primarily "Old Hawaii", the Hawaii that existed before mass tourism and the advent of the high-rise.
Our Kauai, Hawaii, home is located in a sparsely populated rural area with spectacular scenery and uncrowded beaches. The atmosphere is quite "laid back" and relaxed. Restaurants or night life are 5 to 7 miles away. There is a small super market and post office in Hanalei, approximately 5 miles away, and a small convenience-type store less than one mile away. Hanalei, Kauai, has a population of approximately 1200 people.
We mention this comparative isolation because most people prefer the freedom to explore and enjoy unstructured activities, such as swimming, fishing, hiking, or just enjoying the scenery.
Our Kauai, Hawaii, Home Our Hanalei, Kauai, Hawaii residence consists of a double A-frame with an enclosed central room (open to cool tropical breezes).
In praising our home the Cleveland Plain Dealer (A large U.S. newspaper) states:
"lt puts vacationers right at home ... cheaper and more enjoyable than staying in a hotel or resort complex ... a spectacular view of the mountains in the rear, just a three minute walk to a semi-private beach... We could not not have taken a cheaper drink of Kauai had we tried... For the more independent vacationer, who doesn't want an entertainment director but instead is looking for a comfortable mixture of native quaintness and back home creature comforts... Offers expanded opportunities for privacy and experiencing local culture."
